				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Jamila Woods mêle soul, rap, jazz et R’n’B ultra-moderne – des musiques noires, donc. Mieux, son dernier album en date,<em> Legacy ! Legacy !</em>, s&#8217;empare de thèmes actuels (condition des Afro-Américains, féminisme…) et s&#8217;inscrit dans le présent sans jamais oublier ses racines. La Chicagoane intitule chaque titre d&#8217;après une grande figure, de <em>Miles</em> (Davis) à<em> Sun Ra</em>, de <em>Basquiat</em> à <em>Frida</em> (Kahlo). De quoi célébrer l&#8217;héritage en imaginant un nouvel avenir.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Pour son second album, Jamila Woods cherchait «<em> une manière novatrice d’écrire</em> ». La complice de Chance The Rapper a choisi de sacraliser des avant-gardistes, du légendaire Jean-Michel Basquiat au révolté James Baldwin, en passant par l’emblématique Sonia Sanchez. Pour le planant <em>Earhta</em>, elle se glisse dans la peau de la sensuelle chanteuse et danseuse Miss Kitt. En hommage à l’écrivaine Zora Neal Hurston, la native de Chicago brise les préjugés et idées préconçues (<em>Zora</em>). Avec Frida, elle empreinte aux codes du r’n’b old school pour dresser un portrait puissant de la peintre mexicaine. Pour sûr, en recomposant ainsi le passé, entre musique, poésie et performance, Legacy ! Legacy ! (&#8220;héritage !&#8221;&#8230;) restera longtemps dans les mémoires.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Nul besoin de &#8220;guns&#8221; ni de trafics de drogue pour nourrir la bio de Jamila Woods. Elle a passé son enfance dans la chorale de sa grand-mère, explorant en parallèle la collection de vinyles de ses parents. Au lycée, elle découvre la poésie et publie ses premiers vers (anonymement) sur Internet. étudiante à l’Université de Brown, elle rejoint un groupe a cappella et s’essaie au <em>beatmaking</em>, avant de prêter sa voix à des projets d’envergure (dont <em>White Privilege II</em> de Macklemore ou <em>Blessings</em> de Chance The Rapper). Enfin voilà qu&#8217;en 2016 elle sort son premier album ! <em>HEAVN</em> est immédiatement salué par l&#8217;influent <em>Pitchfork</em>. Sur le morceau éponyme, elle s’entoure des mythiques The Roots qui revisitent <em>Just Like Heaven</em> de The Cure. Dès lors, la machine est lancée…</p>
<p><strong>Juste cause</strong></p>
<p>Oscillant entre soul, jazz et rap, Woods ensorcèle autant qu’elle bouscule. Dans <em>Blk Girl Soldier</em>, elle rend ainsi hommage aux femmes qui ont lutté et parfois donné leur vie pour les droits des Afro-américains. Son tempérament de feu et ses textes sans concession rappellent quelques consoeurs engagées telles Princess Nokia ou Kelela. Néanmoins, elle puise son inspiration chez Frida Kahlo ou Erykah Badu. Woods perpétue ainsi l’héritage de ses idoles en « <em>créant un art qui sert le monde</em> », comme elle le dit si bien. En vers et contre tous.</p>
